PRESENTATION

The Post-Graduation Program in Animal Health Defense (professional modality) was designed based on specific demand from Veterinary Doctors who worked as Agricultural Inspectors in the Agricultural Defense Agency of Maranhão State - AGED/MA. This demand emerged in 2010, when AGED/MA board sent a request to the Director of the Veterinary Medicine Course - CCA/UEMA - expressing the interest of Veterinary Medicine professionals from that Agency to be qualified in the Animal Health Defense field. Then, a series of discussions was held with the Veterinary Medicine School and it was decided that professional master’s degree was the most appropriate post-graduation modality for these professionals’ reality. Subsequently, a commission was formed to prepare the proposal to be submitted to the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior). The program’s project was built based on proposals from professors, and it counted on the contribution from interested parties, mainly from professionals who worked in the official animal health defense services, such as AGED/MA, Ministry of Agriculture, State Department of Health, among others. On July 14th, 2011, the project for the Master’s course in Animal Health Defense was presented to UEMA’s directors, Veterinary Medicine Course professors and to other interested parties such as AGED/MA, the Ministry of Agriculture, Department of Health, among other state agencies, in order to make the necessary adjustments before submitting it to CAPES. On July 20th, in that very same year, the proposal was submitted to the Higher Council of the Agrarian Sciences Center (CCA) and, subsequently, to Higher Bodies for approval and final submission to CAPES. Yet, in 2011, the proposal was submitted to CAPES’s New Course Proposal Application (APCN - Aplicativo de Proposta de Cursos Novos) and it was approved with concept 3. A public call for the selection of 20 candidates - number of seats approved by CAPES - was published in the first semester of 2012. In total, 64 professionals applied to the selection process and 20 of them were approved and took all available seats. Classes started in August 2012. In 2017, the master’s degree course was evaluated by CAPES, which increased its score from three to five, a fact that encouraged the group of professors to propose the Doctoral Course in the same field; the APCN proposal was submitted to CAPES in June 2018 and approved in December of that very same year. Thus, The Program rose to the status of Post-Graduation Program in Animal Health Defense (Professional Modality), which included Master’s and Doctoral Courses. The Doctoral Course started its activities in August 2019, with nine doctoral students who had been approved in the selection process held in the first semester of that very same year. In the first semester of 2021, the program started its eighth class in the Master’s degree course and its third class in the Doctoral Course.
